As a practical, commercially astute tax adviser Michael endeavours to bring these qualities to all assignments ensuring clients benefit from his extensive and varied tax and business background. With more than 20 year tax consulting and business experience Michael still relishes the challenge of efficiently and effectively resolving a tax issue no matter the complexity or unique nature of the issue in dispute.

Michael has practiced in the Federal and State tax sphere since 1990 after commencing at Coopers & Lyrband. In 1998 he became a founding partner in of the GST specialist consultancy, ‘Gang of Four’ before founding Webb Martin Consulting in 2001.

During his time at Webb Martin Consulting he has overseen the growth and development of the Consulting business such that it now commands wide respect by operating in a unique and challenging space in the tax consulting market. Michael enjoys the fact that the Consulting business “punches above its weight” by offering expert, independent and cost effective tax advice and an excellent alternative for business when seeking an adviser to assist in resolution of tax issues.

Michael was also a Director of the Webb Martin Training business where, in addition to delivering tax training, he was responsible for facilitating the National growth of the Webb Martin business. Working in Sydney for several years, he oversaw dramatic interstate growth of both the Webb Martin businesses which ultimately culminated in the sale there-of to an ASX listed professional services business.

In early 2006, Michael orchestrated a management buy out of the Webb Martin Consulting business through which all staff was able to take an equity stake.

In 2008 Michael was also involved in the creation of TaxBanter, a tax training business, where he is a Director and responsible for marketing and strategic development of the business.

As a founding partner in 1998 of the unusually named ‘Gang of Four’, Michael was extensively involved in the GST system from it’s design and implementation. This background is deployed today at Webb Martin Consulting and involves advising clients as to the application of GST to all manner of commercial transactions particularly as regards commercial dispute resolution and dealings with the Australian Tax Office involving interpretational issues and dispute resolution.

Michael has extensive experience in many sectors but particularly enjoys assisting the Not for Profit sector with the range of tax issues faced by it.  Common types of assignments include securing income tax exempt status, securing Deductible Gift Recipient status and access to various tax concessions such available for Not For Profits under the GST, FBT and State Pay-roll taxes regimes. Michael’s Not For Profit clients include the Melbourne Cricket Club, the National Sports Museum, Carlton Football Club and the Australian Tissue Engineering Centre.

Michael is also well versed in all Employment Tax matters, particularly State and Territory Pay-roll Taxes. He has assisted countless clients in successfully dealing with State Revenue Office audits and resolving more complex PRT issues generally involving the application of the PRT grouping rules and the contractor provisions.

His exposure to Employment Tax issues means Michael is able to assist in matters related to FBT, Workcover, SGC and the Personal Services Income measures.  Michael’s clients include Nintendo, Porter Davis Homes and PMP Ltd.

Outside of the Office, Michael is active in his local community, enjoys many and varied sporting pursuits, loves a night out or weekend away and most particularly enjoys immersing himself in the fun and frivolity of family life with his wife Caroline and four children.
